JJS Emphasizes Need for Baking Prior to flexible Printed Circuit Assembly

Stephen Las Marias: From your experience, what are the key complications in flexible circuit assembly?

Russell Poppe: From an assembly viewpoint, baking the flexible circuits prior to manufacturing assembly is important because they can be vulnerable to delamination. With that being said, baking any Electronic Board prior to manufacturing is most effective practice and some thing we continually perform at JJS.

One of the primary complications in flexible circuit assembly is ensuring the circuits remain flat, specially throughout the printing and pick-and-place operations. The components of the circuit needing SMT placement must have an FR-4 stiffener designed in underneath; however, it is equally important to work with the Electronic Board supplier up front. Getting the panelization right is significant so that the boards don’t bend when the components are placed or when they go through reflow. Panel design is usually a difficult task as flexible circuits in many cases are strange shapes! It may also be vital to have a tailored carrier or pallet to hold the flexible circuits in place throughout the process; on the other hand, these carry added costs-typically some hundred pounds each.
