JJS Highlights Importance of Baking Prior to flexible Printed Circuit Assembly
Britain-based JJS Manufacturing is an EMS enterprise which concentrates on end-to-end purchasing, manufacturing (PCB Board assembly, box build, cabinet, electro-mechanical) and supply chain solutions. The company supplies challenging, very configurable, low-to-medium-volume industrial electronics products across many different industrial sectors such as industrial automation, process control, test and measurement, and laboratory technology.
Editor Stephen Las Marias talked with Russell Poppe, manager of technology, about the concerns of addressing flexible circuit assemblies and provides ways to handle them.
Stephen Las Marias: From your experience, what are the primary concerns in flexible circuit assembly?
Russell Poppe: From an assembly standpoint, baking the flexible circuits ahead of manufacturing assembly is critical because they can be at the mercy of delamination. Still, baking any PCB Board before manufacturing is best practice and something we constantly perform at JJS.
One of the greatest concerns in flexible circuit assembly is making sure that the circuits keep flat, particularly through the printing and pick-and-place operations. The parts of the circuit which require SMT placement must have an FR-4 stiffener designed in underneath; however, it is also essential to work with the PCB Board supplier up front. Getting the panelization right is essential so that the boards don’t bend when the parts are put or when they pass through reflow. Panel design is often a challenge as flexible circuits are generally odd shapes! It may additionally be necessary to have a bespoke carrier or pallet to hold the flexible circuits in place through the entire process; nonetheless, these carry extra costs-generally a few hundred pounds each.
